Help making a resume for free: what really works

Free ways to get resume help

• Do it yourself with a checklist. Use the free checklist on this page. It covers everything Kenyan employers expect.
• Ask someone who hires. A former boss, lecturer or a friend in HR can spot problems in two minutes. Ask them: "Would you call me for this job?"
• Use your college career office. Many universities and TVETs review CVs for students and alumni at no cost.
• Use a guided builder. On KaziTu you answer friendly questions one at a time and see a full preview of your resume before paying anything.
• Get the free HR plan. Our Get HR's Attention plan is completely free. It tells you who to contact, how to follow up and what to say when you call.

Free resume checklist: step by step

1. Contact details at the top: full name, phone number, a professional email and your town or estate. No need for ID number, age or marital status.
2. Headline: the exact job title you are applying for, e.g. "Accounts Assistant".
3. Profile (2 to 3 lines): who you are, your strongest skill and what you offer this employer.
4. Key skills: 6 to 10 specific skills such as "QuickBooks", "customer care" or "Class B driving licence". Avoid "computer literate".
5. Work experience: most recent first. Under each job, write 2 to 4 results, not duties. Attachments, internships and side hustles count.
6. Education: highest qualification first. If KCSE is your highest level, include your mean grade.
7. Certificates and short courses: CPA sections, first aid, computer packages, online certificates.
8. Referees: 2 or 3 people who supervised or taught you, with correct phone numbers. On a one-page resume you can write "References available on request".
9. Length and file: one page for a resume, up to two for a CV. Save as PDF named "Your_Name_Resume.pdf".

Not sure if you need a resume or a CV? Read our guide to writing a CV; most government and big local employers expect a full CV, while many private firms and online applications prefer a short resume.

What is free on KaziTu, and what costs KSh 50

So if you are thinking "help me build a resume for free", you can do almost everything here without paying. That makes KaziTu a cheap resume builder, but the real value is that every document is customised for the company you want, not a generic template.

A word on "free resume writing services"

Truly free professional resume writers are rare, and some "free" offers end with a surprise fee. Be careful with anyone who asks for money to "process" a job, book an interview or pay for a medical. Real employers don't do that. If you want a person to write for you, our guide to choosing CV writing services explains what to check before you pay anyone.

Is there a free AI resume writer?

Many AI tools let you start free. With KaziTu's AI CV and resume writer you can write and preview everything free, and the AI never invents jobs or grades. It only polishes what you tell it.
